What and If- two words together that changes everything!

Posted by Brenda Yoho

What if today was the day everything changed? The clock did not change and remained the same. The sun stayed in the sky, and the moon stayed hidden. I was just wondering, what if?

What if we had turned left and not right? Would the big semi-truck hit someone else and not us? Just wondering what if?

What if are two words put together that can help us question but also add doubt and regret. Do you have any what if’s?

What if’s=Regret

As adults, we can look at what if as regret. It is perfectly fine to have regret in life but to learn how to deal with the regret to continue to move forward and to learn from the situations. The goal is not to have what and regret.

We cannot control things that happen to us, but we can control how we respond to them. When something traumatic happens, and you feel as if you cannot recover, think again. Maybe you will not be precisely the same, but you will be the best version of yourself.

What are the most common regrets in life?

  • Not traveling
  • Not being the best husband/wife/mother/father/son/daughter
  • Working to much
  • Not taking chances
  • Wishing to spend more time with people I love
  • Always dreaming but not acting on them
  • Comparing myself to others
  • Not having enough fun

What are the regrets you could add to the list?

Change What if to Why not

Why not live your best life starting today? I am not saying quit your job or do something crazy! It is important to make the choices that bring happiness to you with no regrets. “Most folks are as happy as they make themselves be.” -said Abraham Lincoln.

Choose to focus on positives. It is so easy to find negatives, think about the past, and have your mind repeat negative experiences. Our messy world can provide bricks in our backpacks to carry with our own! These become heavy and wear us down if we do not let them go. We do not have to carry these loads alone or at all. Problems are seldom created independently or solved alone. Working together, trusting, supporting, and acknowledging the issues is the first big step.

What if….

We all decided today to be part of the solution and not the problem if we focused on the positives and not the negatives. If we listened to all points of views before closing our minds, opening our minds and welcoming into our space a way to collaborate.

What if before we spoke or did anything, we asked: Is this going to make me or others feel good? Is it going to make me or others feel safe? If the answer is no to either question, then what action or words you are about to do or say is being part of the problem. We can do better in modeling how to disagree, how to resolve issues, and how to debate without the hate.

Imagine…. I can only imagine…. What if we can imagine!
