We Can with Two Rules: Build Staff Resilience

Lead with Two Rules

Building resilience is crucial not only for students but also for the staff who support them. These skills are developed over a lifetime and are vital as we navigate life's challenges. In my book, you'll find valuable information and resources about fostering staff resilience in the Appendix.

Teachers in today’s schools face unprecedented levels of stress. Twenty years ago, the pressures of teacher shortages, budget cuts, the looming possibility of school shootings, intense demands from parents, the aftershocks of virtual education during the pandemic, and the struggle to find work-life balance were unimaginable. Adding to this is the increasing poverty rate, which deeply affects our students and, in turn, our educators.

Building resilience is crucial for staff, just as it is for students. Each individual must understand what works best for them and make time to engage in those activities. This combination of self-awareness and deliberate practice is the foundation of resilience. Think of it as exercising: the more you do it, the stronger you become.

At the heart of building resilience is self-care. Encouraging teachers to develop strong support networks, fostering confidence and self-belief, and providing opportunities for growth are all vital. Hosting a workshop on resilience-building can be a great step towards this goal.

In our "Lead with Two Rules" framework—Feeling Good and Feeling Safe—we can help educators thrive. Let's create a safe space where they feel valued and understood. Let's promote activities that help them recharge and build inner strength. Whether it’s through mindfulness practices, physical exercise, or engaging in hobbies, each step they take towards self-care contributes to their resilience.

Together, we can support our teachers in building the resilience they need to navigate these challenging times. By prioritizing their well-being, we not only improve their lives but also create a more positive and productive learning environment for our students.

Let’s lead with empathy, care, and a commitment to making every educator feel good and safe. After all, resilient teachers lead to resilient students, and that is the cornerstone of a thriving educational community.
