Job Description- What does it say?

Leadership is more than a role; it’s a calling that intertwines the mind and the heart. While changing a mind involves presenting facts, logic, and strategies, changing a heart is a spiritual journey that delves into values, emotions, and purpose. As leaders, we often navigate between these realms, aiming to inspire transformation and growth not just in performance, but in belief and commitment.

My personal passion and purpose are to help others “Lead with Two Rules.” I have worked for decades to establish a system of feeling good and feeling safe for all children served in education. It is a critical part of what we do every minute of the school day and helps teach them the tools they need for the rest of their lives.

In our professional paths, we frequently encounter job descriptions that delineate our responsibilities, guiding our actions and expectations. These documents are essential tools for clarity, accountability, and growth. As leaders, we often participate in creating, revising, and relying on these descriptions to help our teams understand their roles and areas for improvement.

One phrase that commonly appeared in job descriptions I have had over the past few decades: "All other duties assigned." This seemingly simple statement carries profound implications. It underscores the need for flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to go beyond the outlined tasks. But does it mean that you are responsible for everything? In a way, yes. It highlights the dynamic nature of roles in any organization, where unforeseen tasks and challenges often arise.

The essence of this phrase lies in its call for a proactive and responsive attitude. It asks us to be ready to step in, lend a hand, and address needs as they emerge, even if they fall outside the strict boundaries of our defined duties. This aspect of job descriptions can be seen as an invitation to embody a mindset of service, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

From a leadership perspective, this clause is also a reminder that our influence extends beyond specific tasks. It encourages us to cultivate an environment where team members feel empowered to take initiative and contribute to the collective success. It’s about fostering a culture where everyone is willing to pitch in, recognizing that every effort, no matter how small or unexpected, contributes to the larger mission. It reminds me of the phrase I have used for decades, “You can choose to be part of the solution or part of the problem, the choice is always yours to make.” The power of choice is something every individual has. It is important for us to emphasize that with the power of choice comes the responsibility, accountability, and consequences of those choices.

Reflecting on the broader scope of responsibilities, we see that true leadership involves a commitment to holistic development. It’s about nurturing both the professional skills and the personal growth of those we lead. It’s about recognizing that our roles aren’t confined to checklists but are embedded in the fabric of our organizational culture and community.

In this journey, changing a heart becomes a pivotal part of our leadership. It involves connecting with individuals on a deeper level, understanding their motivations, and inspiring them to embrace their roles with passion and integrity. By doing so, we move beyond mere compliance with job descriptions and foster a shared sense of purpose and dedication.

So, while "All other duties assigned" may initially seem like a catch-all clause, it actually encapsulates a profound truth about leadership and responsibility. It calls us to be versatile, to lead by example, and to inspire others to rise to the occasion, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute to the greater good. Knowing if it is not you, then who will be the solution the world is looking for today?

There are many words to add, phrases to capture and duties to assign in a job description. It needs to be clear on the tasks which need to be accomplished by the individual, but never leave out the essential part of being part of your team. The essential part of being a member of your team is……? You define what it is to be part of your family and what you are creating. What are your core values, beliefs, vision and mission?
