Finding Solutions to Burnout

In the journey of leadership, it's not uncommon to face the daunting challenge of burnout. As we navigate the complexities of our roles, the demands can sometimes feel overwhelming. Yet, in the face of exhaustion, let us find solace in the resilience that resides within us.

Burnout is not a sign of weakness; rather, it's a testament to the passion and dedication we bring to our roles. It's a signal that we've been pushing ourselves to our limits in pursuit of excellence. Acknowledge this moment, not as a setback, but as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery.

In the fast-paced and demanding world of leadership, the pressure to maintain a positive facade at all times can exacerbate the already prevalent issue of burnout. Toxic positivity, characterized by the compulsion to project only positive emotions while dismissing or denying negative ones, has a detrimental impact on leaders and their teams. This phenomenon not only diminishes the authenticity of workplace interactions but also contributes significantly to the escalation of burnout.

The relentless pursuit of positivity in leadership circles often leaves individuals feeling unseen, invalidated, or even deficient when faced with challenges or expressing genuine concerns. When leaders succumb to the culture of toxic positivity, it creates an environment where authentic emotions are suppressed, and team members may feel compelled to mask their struggles, further intensifying the burnout epidemic.

One common scenario is witnessing coworkers pressuring each other to "stay positive" or responding to serious concerns with superficial, happy platitudes. This not only fails to address the root causes of the issues but also perpetuates a culture that dismisses the complexities of the human experience. Leaders must recognize the negative consequences of toxic positivity and proactively intervene to foster a healthier and more supportive work environment.


As an educator, former principal, I was guilty of always working to maintain a positive culture. We had a couple of individuals that no matter what we did, they were never happy and were part of driving a “toxic” culture. However, toxic positivity is much different than those who are part of the problem in working to create a toxic environment.

By actively challenging toxic positivity and embracing a more authentic and supportive leadership style, leaders can play a pivotal role in mitigating burnout within their teams. Recognizing and addressing the complexities of the human experience is not a sign of weakness but rather a testament to effective and compassionate leadership.


Education leaders, including principals, often find themselves grappling with the pervasive issue of burnout within their roles. Contrary to the perception that they wield unilateral power to create and implement strategies to combat burnout, these leaders operate within a complex web of organizational dynamics and external pressures.

Principals, as key figures in the education system, are not isolated decision-makers. They navigate a delicate balance of competing demands from various stakeholders, such as parents, union leaders, district officials, and the school board. The multifaceted nature of their responsibilities means that they are not always empowered to address the root causes of teacher burnout comprehensively.

We need to also remember our principals and leaders are burning out quickly. Asking them to help develop plans to help others avoid burnout, adds another layer to their own. What is the solution to the problem? There is not just one solution, it is many layers deep. Let’s begin with these:

  1. Promote Emotional Authenticity: Encourage team members to express their genuine emotions, whether positive or negative, without fear of judgment. Emphasize that acknowledging and addressing challenges is a crucial step towards finding effective solutions.
  2. Active Listening: Leaders should actively listen to their team members, demonstrating empathy and understanding. Genuine concern and support can go a long way in creating a workplace where individuals feel valued and heard.
  3. Normalize Imperfections: Leaders should lead by example by openly acknowledging their own challenges and setbacks. This helps normalize imperfections and creates a culture that values authenticity over a facade of constant positivity.
  4. Provide Resources for Well-being: Offer resources and support for mental health and well-being. This can include access to counseling services, workshops on stress management, and promoting a healthy work-life balance.
  5. Encourage Constructive Feedback: Foster an environment where constructive feedback is not only accepted but also welcomed. This ensures that concerns are addressed in a proactive manner, preventing the buildup of stressors that contribute to burnout.

Addressing burnout among educators requires a holistic approach that goes beyond the purview of individual leaders. It necessitates collaboration among all stakeholders, including policymakers, administrators, teachers, and parents. Creating a supportive and conducive work environment for educators requires a collective effort to tackle systemic issues, empower leaders, and foster a culture that values the well-being of everyone involved in the education system.

Remember, just as the darkest hour precedes the dawn, burnout can pave the way for rejuvenation. Take a step back, reassess your priorities, and rekindle the flames of inspiration that ignited your leadership journey. Seek support from your team and peers, for together, we can overcome any challenge.

In the face of burnout, let us find hope in the knowledge that every storm eventually gives way to calm. Embrace self-care, celebrate small victories, and trust that your leadership journey is a marathon, not a sprint. The best leaders are not those who never face challenges but those who rise stronger after each trial.

So, leaders, take a breath, gather your strength, and remember that your impact is profound. The world needs your leadership, and by nurturing yourself, you ensure that your light continues to shine brightly. Thank you for being part of the solution daily.
